WE ALL HOPE THEY'RE TWO OF A KIND: Alas, football season has finally arrived! Yes, there were other sports many here enjoyed watching, most recently: the Rio Olympics, US Open (tennis and golf), Stanley Cup finals, finals in UEFA, FA (soccer) among others, but there's no getting around it, football remains a solid obsession.
Opening week in college football featured many marquee games, many of which did not disappoint. Well, unless one was watching alongside a Bruin son, deep in enemy territory. Oh well.
This week, not so much anticipation with what seems to be many in-state rivalries. Note: BYU @ Utah, Penn State @ Pittsburgh, Cal @ San Diego State, Iowa State @ Iowa, and of course, the mighty Florida Atlantic Owls @ Miami.
Later on Sunday afternoon our attention will be directed to the Miami Dolphins, when they open up their season against the Seattle Seahawks. Tough one off the gate, as Seattle is certainly one of the top favored teams to end up playing in the Super Bowl this year.
Given the circumstances, i.e. - rookie coach, west coast team and travel, quality opponent, many 'realistic' Dolfans might watch this game anticipating a blowout. Who could blame? Let's face it, the Seahawks defense remains solid and virtually the same as that which allowed the fewest points four consecutive years in the NFL.
Internally, the Seahawks continue to use a player grading system which they borrowed from the Packers. Both teams actively divide players into performance categories; blue for elite, red for 'standouts,' gold for starters, etc. While many would argue that Russell Wilson has yet to reach 'blue' status, few would deny that he, along with the team's 53-man roster is loaded with 'red' graded players. Possibly more than any other current franchise.
PREDICTIONS FROM THE FAITHFUL: Well, here we go again. Our group participation may not be what it once was, but it appears that those of us who still remain, enjoy making these optimistic/pessimistic predictions.
Big Baby: 10-6, Jimbo: 9-7, FZB, david in LA, & Mr. Woodcock: 8-8 and OC Dolphin: 7-9. I didn't see entries from: the shadow knows, the ever-disappearing/reappearing - I am Kazaam, or from Naples Jack, so feel free to include and or correct.
THEN, THERE'S WOODCOCK: As y'all know, Mr. Woodcock paid me a visit recently. I took him to a very swanky, exclusive golf course, which due to its cost, had no one on it besides the two of us. Well, no one other than Bambi who appears here completely unaware that soon hunting season would start and Mr. Woodcock would just as well turn around and attempt to spear him with the 15th hole flag. Heartless rat-bastard!
